ABOUT ME

I started teaching in Mexico in 1995, so many years ago now, but a place and a group of students that laid the foundations of all that was to follow. After working in international development in Ottawa, Toronto, Geneva, and then New York City, and running my own gardening business, I returned to teaching English in 2015. That’s me in the red sweater — I have never been happier!

I strive to be empathetic, patient, encouraging, and reflective in my teaching and my life.

When I’m not teaching, I’m taking long walks, reading a good book, and growing a garden.

I’m the proud mom of two adult kids, both finding their way in the working world, one in Toronto, the other in New York City.

My husband of 28 years still makes me laugh and is my biggest cheerleader.

And while I do love the many cities I’ve lived in, mornings with a book and a coffee by the lake are divine.

TESTIMONIALS

  • When I reached out to Catherine, I had no confidence whatsoever in myself about how I sounded when speaking. I knew there was something “wrong” with my pronunciation but had no idea what exactly was wrong with it. No idea where or how to start. Taking weekly 1:1 sessions with Catherine has made me aware of many sounds I’d hitherto ignored. I love how she is willing to work on the topics that I bring to class, which makes the lessons all the more relevant, and, what’s more, her reactive feedback to my speech production helps me tackle the problem when it happens, before it’s forgotten or lost in conversation. Catherine is my pronunciation coach, but, at the same time, a fellow teacher with whom I inevitably exchange views about teaching. Ultimately, thanks to her work, I’ve become more confident to deliver workshops in my niche and to be active on social media. High ROI. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • "There is a range of areas that I wanted to tackle, such as vocabulary, speaking skills, and pronunciation, and I thought it was great that you made me read more in English, notice language by myself instead of teaching me regular lessons with general materials.

This exercise of detecting language, which is something that I kind of do on my own, but with your guidance and feedback, was much more fruitful, and helped me realize aspects of the language I hadn't paid attention to before.

It was amazing how your selection of materials matched my personality, my tastes. You're a very sensitive person, Catherine. I was really surprised by your selection, how everything fitted. And of course, when we're dealing with topics we like, work becomes much more pleasant." — Izabella Sepulveda, Brazil

  • After taking lots of pronunciation courses in the twenty years I've been teaching English, I can say that Catherine's course has been the only one which gave me the tools to notice MY difficulties and work on them. You won't find a more personalized course! Catherine delivers one-of-a-kind classes and provides us with objective feedback, which allows us to focus on our individual pronunciation problems. I'm halfway done with the course and I can honestly say I'm much more aware of the mistakes I usually make, and I'm doing my best to overcome these difficulties. That's what I call a sound investment - you won't regret it!

  • l'd like to thank Catherine Angus for her keen interest in helping me align my thoughts towards the Spoken English language. She listened to my own (imaginary) dilemmas over the English pronunciation. It turns out that sometimes our negative thoughts towards sounding like a native or near-native speaker prevents us from acknowledging what we have achieved so far. I really appreciate her effort to tailor a program oriented to suit my needs. She has shared different ways to address pronunciation in class. Similarly, she has been humble to listen to my own approach. I feel more confident of delivering my own pronunciation program. Yes, a non-native teacher can also teach an English Pronunciation program! Finally, I also appreciate her encouraging words throughout our sessions. Hearing her say that l am a C2 proficient user makes me feel on cloud nine! Isn't this awesome? —Laidi Oroya, Peru.

  • Dear Catherine, thank you for your feedback. I'm so happy l've improved the sounds which I find difficult. I'll practise 'th' sound which comes after the word ending with 't'. And I need to tell you that I've noticed that my confidence during the classes with my students has improved since I joined your course, Catherine thanks again! — Joanna Radomska, Poland
